LBI HO at the Lange Nacht der Forschung

As part of the Lange Nacht der Forschung on April 24, 2026, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Hematology and Oncology offered engaging insights into leukemia research. The goal was to give visitors a clear and accessible understanding of how new therapeutic approaches are developed and the crucial role leukemic stem cells play in this process. Using custom-designed 3D cell models, a bone marrow model, and interactive card and memory games, complex concepts were presented in an easy-to-understand way. In addition, we explained in a vivid and approachable manner how blood cells are formed, what hematopoietic stem cells are, and how mutations can lead to the development of leukemia. A particular focus was placed on how leukemic stem cells can be identified and specifically targeted. The hands-on pipetting station was also a highlight, giving many visitors the opportunity to try using a pipette for the first time. Overall, it became clear that there is strong interest in research and medical topics across all age groups, and that direct interaction was both informative and inspiring.
