Erfolg durch Zusammenarbeit und Weiterbildung

Das LBI HO organisiert regelmäßig Seminare mit nationalen und internationalen Sprecher:innen. Diese Vorträge finden in der Regel freitags an unserem Institut an der Medizinischen Universität Wien statt. Eingeladene Referent:innen stellen aktuelle Daten ihrer Projekte aus der Hämatologie und Onkologie vor. Im Anschluss sind alle Teilnehmer:innen herzlich zur Diskussion und zum Austausch am „runden Tisch“ eingeladen.

Univ.-Prof. Dr.med.univ. Herbert Strobl (December 12th, 2023)

Herbert Strobl, Professor of Immunology at the Medical University Graz, visited the LBI HO in December 2023, and gave a seminar lecture on the role of TGF-beta signaling in human dendritic cells and related dendritic cell neoplasms – after the seminar, collaborations between the Strobl lab and the LBI HO were discussed.

Prim. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karl Sotlar (July 14th, 2023)

It was a great pleasure to welcome again Prof. Karl Sotlar, a renowned pathologist affiliated with the University Hospital Salzburg. He presented an insightful talk on the current state of molecular pathological diagnostics in myeloid neoplasm. We are delighted to acknowledge the extensive collaboration we have had with Prof. Sotlar over the years. His expertise as a pathologist and extensive knowledge in mastocytosis are enhancing the scope and impact of our research.

Prof. Maria Pia Cosma, PhD (May 12th, 2023)

Prof. Pia Maria Cosma visited the LBI HO and presented her research on implementing artificial intelligence into analysis of super resolution microscopy images with the aim to improve diagnosis of neoplastic disorders. The talk titled “Super Resolution Microscopy for Studying Chromatin Structure and 3D Genome Organization” was well attended and attained interest inside and outside the LBI HO.

Emmanuel Griessinger, PhD (July 29nd, 2022)

The French scientist Dr. Griessinger visited us from the Department of Experimental Hematology, University Medical Center Groningen in The Netherlands. His lecture about „Ex vivo maintenance and monitoring of leukemic stem cells“ was highly anticipated as Dr. Griessinger might be interested in joining our Viennese research team.

Dr. med. univ. Johannes Bigenzahn, PhD (July 22nd, 2022)

In the first Seminar of 2022 Dr. Johannes Bigenzahn introduced us to some new research findings in his talk, titled „Proteostatic signaling aberrations in drug resistant leukemia“. Dr. Bigenzahn completed a PhD at the Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM) in the field of haemato-oncology and molecular signal transduction. His work and research focus on the translational basic research as well as new targeted therapies in oncology and possible resistance mechanisms.

PD Dr. Gregor Hörmann, PhD (September 3rd, 2021)

A concluding highlight of our seminar series for the year 2021 was the on-site talk of PD Dr. Gregor Hörmann PhD. We were particularly happy to welcome Dr. Hörmann, a former member of the LBI HO, in person. Dr. Hörmann recently transferred to the Munich Leukemia Laboratory (MLL), where one of his focusses is the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) into the daily diagnostic routine. His talk, with the title “Artificial Intelligence in Hematological Diagnosis”, gave an impression of state-of-the-art use of AI in the MLL, as well as an outlook on future developments in the field.

Dr. Patrick Haider (July 9th, 2021)

Dr. Patrick Haider, who is currently a PhD student in the group of Univ. Prof. Dr. Johann Wojta at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Internal Medicine II, shared some of his current research findings in a lecture entitled “Interleukin-4 receptor alpha signaling regulates monocyte homeostasis”. The webinar mode was continued.

Univ.-Prof. DDr. Thomas Lion (July 2nd, 2021)

We were pleased to welcome Univ.-Prof. DDr. Thomas Lion, who is heading up the Molecular Microbiology research group at the St. Anna Kinderkrebsforschung/CCRI in Vienna, as a guest speaker. The subject of Univ.-Prof. DDr. Lion’s lecture was particularly topical as he talked about “Adeno-Virus and Corona-Virus Infections: Laboratory Investigations and Clinical Challenges”. Due to COVID-19-related safety measures the seminar was held again as a webinar via Zoom.

Univ.-Prof. DI Dr. Richard Moriggl (May 21st, 2021)

It was with great pleasure that we re-launched our seminar lectures after the COVID-19 pandemic-related pause. Our first guest speaker in 2021 was Univ.-Prof. DI Dr. Richard Moriggl, who is heading the Functional Cancer Genomics, Animal Breeding and Genetics Unit at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. His lecture on the topic of “Novel STAT-Drivers und Novel STAT-Inhibitors in Hematologic and Oncologic Disorders” was eagerly anticipated and equally lauded. Due to the current COVID-19-related restrictions, the seminar was held as a webinar via Zoom.

Dr. Eleni M. Tomazou, PhD (March 27th, 2020)

As part of the LBI HO seminar series we welcomed Dr. Eleni Tomazou, PhD who is the principal investigator at the epigenome-based precision medicine research group at the Children´s Cancer Research Institute, Vienna. Her lecture with the title “Epigenome mapping in Neoplastic Cells: State of the Art 2020 and Clinical Perspectives” provided a comprehensive summary on novel concepts for performing comprehensive epigenome profiling in various neoplasms.

Dr. Michaela Gruber, PhD (January 24th, 2020)

We were pleased to welcome Dr. Michaela Gruber, PhD, a physician scientist in the department of Hematology and Oncology at the Hanusch hospital of the WGKK. Dr. Gruber talked about the “Growth Dynamics in Naturally Progressing Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia”, a topic based on her recent publication in Nature.

Prof. Dr. Heinz Redl (October 25th, 2019)

Prof. Dr. Heinz Redl, whose research focuses on diagnostic and therapeutic advancements for the rehabilitation of patients affected by accidents, gave a stimulating lecture on the topic of tissue regeneration after injuries and the contribution of hematologic cells.
Prof. Redl was director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology within the Trauma Research Center of the AUVA and holds several other academic positions.

Prof. Emilio Casanova-Hevia (August 9th, 2019)

Prof. Emilio Casanova-Hevia from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Cancer Research (LBI-CR) visited us on August 9th, 2019 and presented data about ERBB dependency in KRAS driven lung adenocarcinoma. He is Professor for “Transgenic Models in Cancer Research” at the Medical University of Vienna and an expert for generation of transgenic mouse models. We thank Prof. Casanova-Hevia for his time and interesting talk.

Prof. Karl Sotlar (May 29th, 2019)

We were very grateful to welcome Univ. Prof. Dr. Karl Sotlar, a great pathologist from the University Hospital Salzburg. He gave a very interesting and informative talk about “Microdissection in Hematopathology” followed by a fruitful discussion. Prof. Sotlar is an important collaboration partner of our research group and also member of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM).

Prof. Frank Siebenhaar (April 29th, 2019)

„Mast Cell Activation in Allergy, Atopy and Primary Mast Cell Disorders“ was held by Professor Frank Siebenhaar. This lecture was very interesting review about allergy and its relationship to primary mast cell disorders. Professor Siebenhaar presented a various modalities of mast cell activation and possible therapeutic options, distinguishing between MC-dependent diseases, urticaria and type I allergy.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kern (April 5th, 2019)

It was our pleasure to host a seminar entitled “Flow Cytometry and NGS in the Diagnosis of MDS and CMML” given by Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Kern today. Prof. Dr. Kern is the cofounder of the Munich Leukemia Laboratory (MLL) where he has been Head of the Immunophenotyping Department since 2005. He was previously in charge of immunophenotyping at the Laboratory for Special Leukemia Diagnostics, Clinic Munich-Großhadern. Prof. Dr. Kern has a long lasting research track record in identification of molecular markers in various hematologic malignancies and their application in diagnosis and prognostication as well as disease management. His talk focused on state-of-the-art diagnostic panels currently used or under development in improving the diagnosis of MDS and CMML. The seminar was followed by an inspiring discussion on potential future and ongoing collaborations. We thank Prof. Dr. Kern for his time and the wonderful talk.

Prof. Dr. Petri T. Kovanen (March 22nd, 2019)

Prof. Petri T. Kovanen from the University of Helsinki gave a great talk about “The Role of Mast Cells in Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis” at one of our LBI Joint-seminars. His presentation was very interesting, and we had a fruitful discussion and exchanged a lot of ideas for research on mast cells. Prof. Kovanen is a member of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) and contributes to annual EAS meetings and summer schools, where he teaches vascular biology to students.

rof. Dr. Dominik Wolf (February 8th, 2019)

Prof. Dr. Dominik Wolf from the Medical University of Innsbruck visited Vienna to give a very informative talk within the scope of the LBI Joint-seminars. His presentation was entitled “Regulation and Impact of Immunological Checkpoints in Myeloid Neoplasms”. Prof. Dr. Wolf did his professorship at University Hospital Bonn and is now director of the Department of Internal Medicine V in Innsbruck. The clinical area of the Department is the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the blood, lymph tissue and malignant solid tumors.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Uwe Simon (July 6th, 2018)           

Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon is Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Bern. Currently, he also serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bern. He is also Editor-in-Chief of two journals: International Archives of Allergy and Immunology as well as Cell Death & Disease. Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon is interested in pathogenic mechanisms of eosinophilic diseases, such as hypereosinophilic syndromes (HES). On July 6th in 2018, he visited Prof. Peter Valent and his research team and gave an interesting talk about “Role of Eosinophils in HES and Related Conditions: Update 2018”.

Dr. Stefan Florian, PhD (May 8th, 2018)

It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Stefan Florian from the Institute for Pathology at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He provided us an overview of microtubules in cancer therapy. The presentation was entitled “Cancer therapy and microtubules – how basic research and medicine collaborate but fail to communicate”. Dr. Stefan Florian did his postdoctoral fellowship at Havard Medical school, where his main research focused on the mechanism of action of microtubule binding drugs. Besides, he was one of the first students in the research group of Prof. Valent, where the main focus is on identifying potential drug targets in cancer stem cells of hematological malignancies.

Prof. Cem Akin (April 27th, 2018)

Professor Dr. Cem Akin held a talk entitled “Mast cell activation syndromes” where he gave a concise overview about rare condition termed as a mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and a less severe local form of MC activation (MCA). This lecture reviewed available diagnostic criteria and diagnostic tools that could be helpful for differential diagnoses of MCAS and MCA.

Prof. J.C. Hanneke Kluin-Nelemans (March 16th, 2018)

Prof. Kluin-Nelemans from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands visited us on March 16th in 2018 and talked about development and interventional drug therapies in mastocytosis. Her research focuses on the treatment of patients with advance systemic mastocytosis. In 2017, Prof. Hanneke Kluin-Nelemans was selected as researcher of the year and gold medal winner of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM).

Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann (February 9th, 2018)

On 9th of February our cooperation partner Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann joined us for a seminar lecture of the LBI-HO and SFBF47. Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann is Professor of Allergology and Head of the Division of Allergy at the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. The focus of her clinical research is mastocytosis, a rare disease characterized by a pathological proliferation of mast cells. Other specialties include urticaria, angioedema and atopic dermatitis. She is also a member of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM). Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann gave a talk on clinical perspectives of midostaurin in mastocytosis. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to exchange and discuss.

Dr. Kilian Huber (November 17th, 2017)

It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Kilian Huber, Group Head at the Structural Genomics Consortium, Target Discovery Institute at the University of Oxford, to our institute in November 2017. His research focuses on development of small molecules for novel drug targets in cancer and inflammatory diseases. His seminar lecture was entitled “Chemical Probes for Drug Target Validation”. We thank Dr. Kilian Huber for his visit and time.

Prof. Rudolf Kirchmair (October 20th, 2017)

Prof. Rudolf Kirchmair from the Medical University in Innsbruck visited us on October 2017 and gave a talk about mouse models and their use to assess metabolic and vascular pathologies contributing to atherosclerosis. He is associate director at the Department for Internal Medicine III – Cardiology and Angiology at the Medical University in Innsbruck. He is an important collaboration partner within studies to assess drug-induced vasculopathies.

Dr. Sigurd Broesby-Olsen (September 22nd, 2017)

Dr. Sigurd Broesby-Olsen (MD) from the Mastocytosis Centre Odense University Hospital (MastOUH) in Denmark visited Prof. Valent and his research group on Friday, September 22nd in 2017. As part of the joint seminar of the SFB F47-B20 and the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster Oncology Dr. Sigurd Broesby-Olsen talked about “Diagnostic algorithms in patients with suspected SM”. With MastOUH Dr. Sigurd Broesby-Olsen is an active member of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM).

Prof. Dr. Michael W. Deininger (October 8th, 2017)

Prof. Dr. Michael W. Deininger is Head of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. His main interest is chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). He gained extensive experience treating patients suffering from CML at the University Hospital of Utah. In October 2017 he presented us very interesting data about TNF signaling in myeloproliferative neoplasms. Afterwards we had a fruitful discussion and some exchange about new ideas for possible upcoming studies in CML.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Wicklein (August 25th, 2017)

It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Dr. Wicklein at the Medical University of Vienna. He is group leader at the Institute for Anatomy and Experimental Morphology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. His main research focuses on metastasis formation in mouse models. At the seminar lecture he talked about models of dissemination and metastasis formation of human neoplastic cells in mice. After the talk, we could discuss about our experiences with in vivo experiments, such as engraftment of human cancer cells in various mouse models.

Dr. Chiara Elena & Prof. Dr. Luca Malcovati (May 12nd, 2017)

In May 2017, Dr. Chiara Elena and Prof. Dr. Luca Malcovati were visiting us from the University of Pavia in Italy. Both scientists are working at the Department of Hematology Oncology and the Department of Molecular Medicine. Prof. Dr. Luca Malcovati is Assistant Professor of Hematology and his primary area of clinical and research interest are the myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myeloproliferative disorders (MPN). Dr. Chiara Elena is also and hematologist and working in the field of MDS and MPN. Both are active members in clinical and translational research programs in MDS and MPN. The seminar lecture was entitled “Clinical implication of somatic mutations in myeloid neoplasms with myelodysplasia: MDS and CMML”. We thank both for their time to visit us and present recent data about their research work.

Dr. Thomas Köcher (April 14th, 2017)

Dr. Thomas Köcher, from the Vienna Biocenter Core Facilities (VBCF) visited us on April 2017. He talked about metabolomics in cancer research and beyond. He is Core Facility Head of Metabolomics and generates quantitative pictures of small biomolecules. He and his team offer analysis of extracts from various biological samples using targeted liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS). He has more than 15 years experience in quantitative and qualitative Analytics. It was very interesting for us to get insights in the research field of metabolomics.

Dr. Georg Winter (February 17th, 2017)

Georg Winter is a principal inverstigator at the CeMM. In his seminar he presented a novel pharmacological concept how to target oncoproteins in cancer cells. Dr. Winter gave a very interesting talk about the development and mechanism of protein-degrading drugs and their effects on survival of AML and ALL cells including LSC.

Prof. Simona Soverini (August 5th, 2016)

Prof. Soverini is an assistant professor at the Department of Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine – DIMES at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna in Italy. Prof. Soverini is well-connected in the field of hematology and has many international collaboration partners. She was invited to held a seminar lecture in August, 2016 at our institute in Vienna. She gave a very interesting talk about genome-wide sequencing analyses of neoplastic cells in various myeloid neoplasms including CML, AML and systemic mastocytosis.

Prof. Dr. Cem Akin (March 25th, 2016)

The seminar lecture entitled „Updated classification of mastocytosis and MCAS“, was held by famous expert in this field, Professor Dr. Cem Akin. This lecture was not only an impressive overview of mastocytosis but also provided information about relationship and very important differences between mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).

Dr. Katerina Machova, PhD (September 4th, 2015)

Dr. Katerina Machova is Head of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in Prague. She is interested in mechansims of myeloid differentiation at progenitor levels. The clinical research focuses on tyrosine kinase inhibitors in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Furthermore, she is investigating miRNA expression in CML patients. Her lecture was entitled “Molecular Studies on BCR/ABL and BCR/ABL-dependent Events in CML”. We thank her for her visit and the interesting data on BCR/ABL mutations in CML.

Prof. Stefan Fröhling (May 22nd, 2015)

Prof. Dr. Stefan Fröhling was invited to our Friday seminar on 22nd of May in 2015. He is a medical doctor and scientist at NCT/Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum und Abteilung Medizinische Onkologie. The talked about „Expression and Role of CDK6 in Myeloid Leukemias“ which was very interesting for our group.

Prof. Dr. Markus Manz (January 16th, 2015)

It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Dr. Markus Manz from the University of Zurich. His research focuses on development, homeostasis and function of the haematopoietic- and the immune system, as well as on hemato-lymphoid diseases. His talk was entitled “Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cell Response to Bacterial Stimuli”.

Prof. Andreas Reiter (January 15th, 2015)

Prof. Dr. Andreas Reiter was invited to give a talk at the joint seminar of the SFB F47-B20 and the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster Oncology on Thursday, January 15th in 2015. He talked about “Biology, Diagnosis and Management of eosinophilic neoplasms”. Prof. Dr. Andreas Reiter is focusing on rare myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), such as chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) as well as systemic Mastocytosis (SM). At the Medical Clinic III of the University of Mannheim in Germany he established an “Excellence Center for MPN”, where medical data from MPN patients are collected and evaluated.

Prof. Hiroshi Maeda (November 12nd, 2014)

We were happy to welcome Prof. Hiroshi Maeda, a Japanese pharmacologist and chemist on Friday 12nd November 2014. He is known for the discovery of the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, where certain molecules, such as liposomes, nanoparticles and macromolecular drugs tend to accumulate in tumor tissue more than in normal tissues. His talk was entitled “Nanomedicine for cancer selective delivery: Advantage of the EPR effect and pitfalls”. It was a pleasure to meet him and discuss about cancer-targeted therapy.

Prof. Hans-Peter Horny (October 3rd, 2014)

Prof. Hans-Peter Horny, a famous pathologist from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany, was invited to give a seminar lecture of the SFB F47-B20 and the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster Oncology on 3rd October 2014. He gave a lecture with the title “Morphologic and phenotypic heterogeneity of mast cells and basophils in the neoplastic bone marrow”. As one of the best pathologists, he is a very important member of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM). We thank him for his time and interesting microscopic images.

Prof. Peter Sill (September 12nd, 2014)

On Friday 12nd of September we were happy to welcome a long-term cooperation partner from the Medical University of Graz in our hospital in Vienna, namely Prof. Peter Sill. He talked about „Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms“ and he presented very interesting facts and results which were discussed extensively after his presentation.

Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann (August 28th, 2014)

Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann, PD at the Department of Dermatology and Venerology of the Medical University of Köln, Germany, was a guest of the SFB F47-B20 and the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster Oncology on 28th August 2014. She gave an interesting talk with the title „Mastocytosis in the Skin: New Concepts in Basic Science and Clinical Research“. Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann is Professor of Allergology and an important member of the European Competence Nework on Mastocytosis (ECNM). We thank her for her time and great discussions.

Prof. Marie C. Béné (August 1st, 2014)

Prof. Marie C. Béné from Nantes in France visited us in August 2014 and gave a lecture about flow cytometric evaluations in myeloid neoplasms, their diagnostic challenges and proposed algorithms. She is Professor at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nantes and her main research focuses on B-cell malignancies. We thank her for fruitful discussions about flow cytometric analyses of blood and bone marrow samples.

Marc Kernyi, PhD (March 4th, 2014)

On the 4th of March 2014 Marc Kerenyi, PhD visited us from Boston. He is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Center – Harvard Medical School. His very interesting talk at our Friday seminar was about „Histone Demethylase Lsd1 Represses Stem and Progenitor Cell Signatures during Blood Cell Maturation”.

Assoc. Prof. Priv.-Doz. DDr. Philipp Staber (October 4th, 2013)

Prof. Philipp Staber did his PostDoc at the Havard Medical School from 2009 to 2013. In this time, he visited our institute in Vienna. In his seminar lecture he presented us an overview of functions of non-coding RNA in leukemias. Currently, he is Associate Professor and Program Director of Lymphoma and CLL at the Medical University of Vienna.

Prof. Elisabeth Paietta (September 4th, 2013)

It was a pleasure to meet Prof. Elisabeth Paietta from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. As part of our LBI joint seminars, she gave a very interesting and informative presentation about „Leukemic and Preleukemic Neoplastic Stem Cells as Source of MRD in acute Leukemia“, followed by a fruitful discussion.

Prof. Dr. Dominik Wolf (August 9th, 2013)

It was a great pleasure to welcome Prof. Dr. Dominik Wolf from the University Hospital Bonn, Germany in the general hospital of Vienna. He gave a very interesting talk about „The role of the immune system in the development and evolution of CML and other MPN” followed by a fruitful discussion.

Prof. Dr. Karin Hartmann (July 26th, 2013)

Dr. Karin Hartmann, an expert in cutaneous Mastocytosis, gave a talk about “Mastocytosis in the skin: new concepts in basic science and clinical research”. She is also a member of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) and an important collaboration partner of our research group.

Prof. Dr. Peter Bettelheim (July 7th, 2013)

Prof. Peter Bettelheim (Elisabethinen Hospital Linz, Austria) is a long-standing collaboration partner of our research group. In his seminar today he presented an overview of erythropoiesis, followed by his own data on how erythropoiesis is altered in the development of myelodysplastic syndromes. Special focus of the presentation was the aberrant expression of cell surface markers.
